Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, ability, or any other dimension of diversity.

We want to embrace diversity as a source of innovation, creativity, and strength and we want to ensure that we reflect that in our actions as well as our words. That’s why we are excited to be working with the Ray Corollary Initiative™ (RCI™) and other partners to develop a framework and take actionable steps towards increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in Alternative Dispute Resolution.

We recognize that achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion is an ongoing journey that requires constant learning, listening, and action. We are committed to continuously improving our practices and policies to create a more inclusive workplace and community. Some key elements of our existing programme include:

  • Encouraging commitment to the RCI and REAL pledges

  • Providing research and tools to support the selection of diverse neutrals

  • Ensuring our facility is accessible to those with disabilities

  • Providing assistive technology, such as Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ACC) devices, and visual alerting systems for use during hearings and meetings at CI-MAC upon request

  • Ensuring speaking opportunities and other occasions for non-traditional practitioners to gain exposure and experience

  •  Encouraging inclusive protocols during virtual and hybrid proceedings, such as the use of “Alt Text,” gender pronouns, transcription and interpretation services

Diversity is important in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) because it helps to ensure fairness and impartiality in the decision-making process. When there is a diverse panel of arbitrators, mediators, or other ADR practitioners, there is a greater likelihood that the perspectives and experiences of all parties involved will be considered and reflected in the outcome.

In addition, diversity in ADR can help to build trust and confidence in the process, particularly among marginalized groups who may have historically been underrepresented or excluded from the legal system. When participants see that the ADR process is inclusive and values diversity, they are more likely to feel that their interests are being heard and taken into account.

Furthermore, diversity in ADR can lead to more creative and effective solutions. Diverse perspectives can bring fresh ideas and approaches to the table, and can help to identify blind spots or biases in the decision-making process.

We believe that our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is not only the right thing to do, but it also helps us better serve our customers, partners, and stakeholders. The burden of moving the needle on diversity, equity and inclusion is on all of us and not just the duty of diverse individuals. Therefore, we invite all members of our community to join us on this journey towards a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future.
