Derek was admitted to practice as a Solicitor in Jamaica in 1970 and subsequently in

the Cayman Islands, Grenada, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent/ Grenadines, and

the United Kingdom.

Was a litigator for much of his fifty odd years but today provides commercial advice

based on his wide-ranging commercial, legal, and executive experience.

He enjoys the very rare distinction of having been ranked by the authoritative guide of

Chambers and Partners in two jurisdictions namely Jamaica and Cayman, and in two

different practice areas.

Appeared in a number of landmark cases in Jamaica and elsewhere and was the lead

Counsel for Cable & Wireless across the Caribbean against the Governments of the

region in relation to their licences 

Was the First Caribbean based speaker to be admitted as a  member of the National

Speakers Association of the United States.  

He has served as Chairman of :-

Kingston Wharves Limited a publicly listed Company

MFG Trust & Finance Ltd – a privately held Merchant Bank and Licensed Deposit taking

institution

Jamaica Racing Commission Tribunal for Breaches of Rules of Horse Racing. In this

capacity heard and adjudicated on dozens of matters covered by the Rules of Racing

including the doping of racehorses, the conduct of jockeys during races and a variety of

other incidents

And as:-

President - Jamaican Bar Association

Director - Caribbean Cement Company Limited

Trustee - Urban Development Company Pension Fund

Member - All Island Electricity Appeals Tribunal. In this capacity heard and determined

appeals from the principal electricity provider in Jamaica in matters to do with their rate

structure, recovery of hurricane damages as part of their rate structure and related

matters

Tutor in Law Office Management - Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and the

Truman Bodden Law School in the Cayman Islands

Member of the Disciplinary Committee - General Legal Council in Jamaica – In this

capacity sat on dozens of Disciplinary hearings against Attorneys for various ethical

complaints ranging from fraud to conflicts of interest and other conduct deemed a

dishonor to the profession

Managing Partner - Myers, Fletcher & Gordon – In this capacity was responsible for the

management of the largest law firm in Jamaica (forty lawyers) for a period of seven

years.

Regional Managing Partner – Higgs & Johnson law firm

Senior Legal Counsel - ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 – In this capacity was responsible

for negotiating with nine Governments for the arrangements surrounding the 2007

Cricket world Cup. Supervised the drafting and passage of the “Sunset Legislation”

which facilitated the holding of the event across nine sovereign territories. Was

responsible to explain and educate the Governments and people about the concept of

“ambush marketing” a key component of the enabling legislation.

Founding partner of the firm of HSM Chambers, Cayman Islands. (Retired June 2019)

Council Member - Cayman Attorneys Regulatory Authority

Accredited by the American Arbitration Association and conducted international

arbitrations under their aegis,

Received mediation training from the American Bar Association

Has conducted several formal and informal mediations in commercial, matrimonial,

property and other disputes

Is presently Chairman of :-

Cable and Wireless Jamaica Pension Fund

Red Stripe Pension Fund two of the largest pension funds in Jamaica and of

Sterling Investments Ltd. a licensed securities dealer in Jamaica and the

Jamaica College Trust.
